Annie MacPhee of New Zealand talks Maggie Campbell in June 2000 about her childhood in Balephuil and Hynish, her schooling and teachers at Balemartine, her father’s smiddies in Hynish and Balinoe, her family’s emigration to New Zealand in 1927, the help they received from Tirisdeach Donald MacLean in acquiring a sheep station, and the party arranged for her family’s visit to Tiree by Lachie and Sandra Brown.

Kenneth MacQuarrie interviews Alasdair MacNeill of Balevullin who sings a song about the Crofters’ War, talks about his early days as a farm-hand in Ayrshire, his sea-faring days and transporting the first 3000 American soldiers to join World War I from New York to Liverpool, going to New Zealand in 1924 where he worked as a farm-hand, his experience aboard the sinking ship Ventura en route from New Zealand to America in 1931 and finally sings a song he remembers from his childhood. Alex MacLean (Ailig Iain Alasdair) of Cornaigbeg talks to John Donald MacLean in 1998 about his ancestors, some of whom emigrated to New Zealand, a MacLean gathering there of 80 of his relatives, bulb growing on Tiree which was set up in 1958 by the Agricultural College, the MacEachern blacksmiths, one of whom was a lay preacher, the making of a harpoon for catching whales, the coal puffers which unloaded their cargo on different beaches and crofting in general. The MacLean family in 1901

Hector MacLean, a crofter in Balephuil, married Mary MacDonald of Caoles in 1828. The couple had nine children, two which are in this photograph of 1901: Hugh (Eòghann Mòr) seated on the left and Allan (Ailean Bàn) on the right. Allan owned and skippered the schooner ‘Cirrus of Rosa’.

In 1877 Mary, by then a widow, emigrated to Shoal Lake, Manitoba with four of her sons and two daughters. Only Hugh remained on Tiree where he settled on the croft at Caoles tenanted by his maternal uncle. Two of Hugh’s three sons, Donald and Hector, are also in the photograph.

Hector was a minister who spent most of his life on Skye; his four sons all became doctors. Donald had three sons and his descendants still live on Tiree today.

Johnny MacKinnon, Lodge Farm, Kirkapol, brother of the Rev. Hector MacKinnon. He emigrated to Manitoba with his brother Charlie who died in Canada from flu.
