Wood cabinet containing a list of the crew of HMS Sturdy in 1940

Hand-made oak cabinet containing lists of the crew of the destroyer HMS Sturdy when is was wrecked on rocks at Sandaig in October 1940, and photographs of the grave stones of five members of the crew that were drowned. Brass plates on the lid are engraved with “HMS Sturdy” and “The Ships Company 1940”. Made by Lt. Cdr. Mike Gibson in 2011 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the disaster in Oct. 2010, and presented by Mrs Cooper and Mike Gibson to the people of Tiree in recognition of their assistance to the crew at the time.

Section of sub-sea power cable between Tiree & Gunna

Section of the sub-sea power cable that conducts electricity to Tiree from the mainland. The section was cut from between Gunna and Tiree when the power cable was broken and replaced in 2011. Three-phase current at 11,000 volts (compared with the Islay cable which operates at 33,000 volts). Yellow and black outer sheath, inner protection of ring of steel wires, followed by ring of lead insulation around inner electrical cable of three copper cores.

Copy of OS map of Tiree (1:25,000) that has been annotated by hand to show which roads are to be upgraded in an extensive road improvement programme for the island. Probably in the 1970s. Locations of shops and road weight limits are included. Marked on the reverse “Tiree – for Bob Jones”.
