Collection of items from an Iron Age or Medieval midden at Balevullin

Cardboard box of 17 artefact bags containing a collection of around 600 pieces of pottery sherds, flints, iron slag, bog iron and iron scrap from the remains of an Iron Age or Medieval midden situated in a blown-out dune on Balevullin machair, 100m north of the road cattlegrid between Kilmoluaig and Balevullin (Baca Charachan). Returned to donor from the Treasure Trove department at the National Museum in Edinburgh.

Lumps of Tiree peat

Three lumps of peat collected from the bank of Amhainn Bhan, Balevullin, in 2012. Only a small amount of peat was ever present on Tiree, and all the useful cuttings were exhausted decades ago. These pieces are very rare examples.

Pewter tankard awarded in 1884

Pewter tankard inscribed “10th LRV Sports 1884 Tug-o-War won by N. McIntyre”. Found on a beach on Tiree and given to the donor`s mother around 1980. N. McIntyre may have been Neil McIntyre, Balevullin/Kilkenneth (b. ca. 1840), the donor`s gt-gt-gt-gt-grandfather`s brother (see 2012.116.2).
