Fragments of pottery and other material from Balevullin machair

Around 160 small fragments of clay pottery, cast iron cooking pot (17th-19th century), blacksmithing slag and hearth, and chips off beach cobbles, collected from a midden on Balevullin machair by Dr John Holliday between June 2011 and January 2012. Includes an analysis of the material by Dr Fraser Hunter (original copy filed as 2012.65.2).

Black & white photograph of Murdoch & Peggie Cameron standing in the doorway of their house at Balevullin, with a young Ian Aitkens standing nearby in 1948. Ian and his parents and brother came to live with Murdoch & Peggie from the south of England during WWII to escape the bombing and threat of invasion. (original reprint stored in filing cabinet 9 drawer 3)

Collection of photographs belonging to Willie Adair, Balevullin & Scarinish

Collection of 14 black & white and colour photographs belonging to Willie Adair (1925-2010), Balevullin & Scarinish. Willie was a foster child from Glasgow who came to live in the red-roof house in Balevullin. He was a great piper. Married first to Ina Lamont, Balemartine, then Agnes in Greenock. Returned to the Eventide Home in Scarinish for his last days. His niece `B` looked after Willie in Greenock and erected his headstone on Tiree. Seven photos of Willie accessioned separately Q113-Q119. Others are of his brother Tom, sister Jeannie and her daughter `B` and son `Little Jimmie` amongst others.

Sepia photograph of a young Willie Adair, Balevullin & Scarinish, with his older brother Tom, sister Jean and housekeeper Margaret Duffy, ca 1930. The family lived in Glasgow. Their mother died giving birth to Willie and were raised by the housekeeper. Willie was later fostered to Balevullin. (Original in filing cabinet 9 drawer 3)

Black & white photograph of L-R: Hector Campbell; Willie Adair, Balevullin & Scarinish; William (Jock) Gillespie; unknown; Walter Campbell (Jr). Willie served in the police force in Greenock and was an accomplished piper. Walter’s first piping tutor was his grandfather, Neil Lamont of Balemartine/Cornaig. The photograph was probably taken in around 1960 in Luton where Jock and Walter were police officers.

Information about the SS Gaul that was wrecked off Balevullin in 1926.

Printed email of information about the Grimsby steam trawler SS Gaul that was wrecked off Balevullin beach in 1926. Of the nine crew, seven perished in the sea and two made it to the shore in bad condition. The locals cared for the two survivors, Edward Thomson and George Pratt, until fully recovered. The body of the ship`s cook, Amos Beard, was washed ashore later and was buried on Tiree.
