Hardback book ‘The Phonetics of the Gaelic Language and a System of Phonography’ by Malcolm MacFarlane, 1889. Includes exposition of orthography. Presented to Cornaigmore library in 1906 by James Coats, Jnr of Ferguslie House, Paisley, who donated hundreds of books to Tiree’s schools and to the Reading Room (now An Iodhlann).

Text and images from a presentation about newspaper articles about emigration to Canada in 1849, including an advert in the Glasgow Herald for passage on the fast sailing ship Charlotte, departing from Glasgow for Quebec and Montreal, and a notice issued by Her Majesty’s Emigration Officer refuting a “scandalous and unfounded statement” published in the Examiner newspaper about the poor conditions aboard The Charlotte.

Photocopy of a typed transcript of an interview with Hector MacPhail, Cornaigbeg, on 19 May 1992, about himself, boats, sea transport and sailors, with particular reference to Allan MacFadyen, Scarinish, and ships the Mary Stewart and the Mary & Effie. Topics also include alchohol taxation, violence, Clearances, landowners, hotels, Crofters’ War, coal puffers. The interviewer is given only as ‘Smith’.

“Captain Kenneth Norman MacKenzie (1897-1951). His logs of the Discovery are at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. He was the Master of the Discovery on the Second BANZARE Voyage in 1930-1931. On the First BANZARE Voyage in 1929-1930 he was the First Officer. There is some material at the Dundee Heritage Trust site. Also have a look at the Australian Antarctic Data Centre re MacKenzie Bay. Images are online at the National Library of Australia site called Trove. Also there is good coverage in books on the Antarctic such as Winning of Australian Antarctica by Grenfell Price and The Voyages of the Discovery by Ann Savours”

Hardback book ‘Celtic Studies: Essays in memory of Angus Matheson 1912-1962’ edited by James Carney and David Greene, 1968; which belonged to Allan MacDougall, Headteacher at Cornaigmore School during the 1940s. Essays by friends of Angus Matheson reflecting his range of interests which, while primarily directed towards Gaelic language and literature, embraced the whole field of Celtic Studies.
