Digitised copy of a letter from the Board of Supervision, to the Duke of Argyll, dated 26 November 1885 regarding the care of paupers in Tiree. A copy letter from D McPhail, Inspector of Poor in Tiree, dated 26 October 1885, is enclosed. McPhail writes regarding the death of Janet McLean or McFadyen (pauper, Balinoe) who lived alone and was found dead in her house. A copy of the medical certificate signed by Alexander Buchanan is included. McPhail observes that ‘we may have more cases of the same kind’ and that ‘the above is the second death in a house alone within the parish this year’.

Also enclosed is a list of paupers living alone in the Parish of Tiree, dated 16 November 1885: Ann McKinnon (Balinoe), Hector McLean (Balinoe), Cath[erine] McDougall (Balephuil), Marion Kennedy (Balevullin), Christina McDonald (Caoles), Mary Brown (Caoles), Mary Campbell (Ernal), Cath[erine] McLean (Ernal), Cath[erine] McFadyen (Heanish), Ann McLean (Hynish), Hannah McDonald (Kenovay), Cath[erine] McKinnon (Mannal), Flora Brown (Sandaig), Malcolm McDonald (Scarinish), Cath[erine] McKinnon (Scarinish), Flora Cameron (Ruaig), Arch[ibal]d McLeod (Vaul). McPhail notes the types of support they receive from the Parochial Board (including ‘necessary clothing and an allowance of soap’).

Transcript of Precognition of Witnesses submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal regarding the sudden death of John McNeill, March 1861. McNeill (aged 36, son of Niel McNeill, Balevullin) died following a short illness, and was attended on by Alexander Buchanan. Statements are provided from:

Donald McNeill (shoemaker, Balevullin. Brother of deceased)
Christina Macdonald (servant to and residing with Niel McNeill, Balevullin)
Niel MacNeill (crofter, Balevullin. Father of deceased)
Isabella McNeill or McLeod (wife of Archibald McLeod, Balevullin. Sister of deceased)
Donald Lamont (fisherman, Balevullin)

This record mentions that McNeill was making some ‘straw rope’.

Digitised copy of Observations on Tiree by Dr Walker, 1765. Dr Walker’s observations are arranged under the following headings: situation, extent, hills, harbour, tides, springs, sea, soil, rieve [reef], climate, crops, inhabitants, longevity, diseases, antiquities, agriculture, inclosures, cattle, grain, change of seed, hay, manures, turneps [turnips], price of commodities, price of labour, exports and imports, manufacture, fishery, hemp, natural productions, marble, copper, porphyry. There is no transcript for this item but see 1997.273.1.

The Rev Dr John Walker, minister of Moffat and a pioneer of scientific botany and geology, was sent to the Hebrides in 1764 and 1771 by the Commission for Annexed Estates to report on the social conditions, population and the state of manufacture, agriculture and fisheries.

Black & white photograph of Alexina Mary McLean (1926-1929), daughter of Donald Archibald McLean, Kenovay, in around 1929, and the family gundog, Flossie. Alexina was named after her Uncle and Aunt, Alexander Walker and Mary McLean (sister of Donald Archibald), who gave Alexina a present of a doll, which was kept long after her death at the age of three. Part of a large collection of items belonging to and about Donald Archibald McLean, Kenovay (1890-1981), and his family.

Hand-framed newspaper obituary for Jessie Ann MacDonald of Milton Cottage, Caoles, who died at the age of 18 in 1898. She attended school at Ruaig and Glasgow, worked in Glasgow, then returned to Tiree to work in the post office. Daughter of Archibald MacDonald, who worked for MacBrayne ferries. From a collection of items found in Milton Cottage, Caoles.
