Collection of articles, poems, photographs and illustrations by Alistair MacNeill of Hynish (b. 1940). Alistair recollects his experiences competing in the County Sports, Skerryvore Lighthouse, the Great China Tea Race of 1866, rock fishing with a bamboo rod, ‘The Wembly Wizards’ Scottish football team of 1928, gathering tangles (seaweed) for the kelp industry, Ben Nevis, a puffer coal boat at Hynish pier. Includes two covering letters with further information.

Printed photograph of four brass printing plates and their corresponding prints, used by Mona MacDonald to create postcards for selling from her shop in Scarinish in around the 1960s. Each plate was inked with a different colour, the combined effect creating the final full-colour postcard of boats in Scarinish Harbour.

Lump of ‘sea coal’ found at Port a’ Mhuilinn, Hynish (grid ref. NL 97995 38780), from one of two  shipwrecks, either the coal puffer ‘Regina’ 1872 (Canmore ID# 256038), or the cargo steam ship ‘Marchioness of Lorne’ 1875.

Memoirs of Alistair MacNeill, Hynish, ‘They were our Vital Sparks’ which recall his fascination with the coal puffers that visited Hynish to off-load coal and other goods during the 1950s. The puffers also took away bundles of kelp for processing on the mainland.

Photocopy of a typed transcript of an interview with Hector MacPhail, Cornaigbeg, on 19 May 1992, about himself, boats, sea transport and sailors, with particular reference to Allan MacFadyen, Scarinish, and ships the Mary Stewart and the Mary & Effie. Topics also include alchohol taxation, violence, Clearances, landowners, hotels, Crofters’ War, coal puffers. The interviewer is given only as ‘Smith’.

Printed memoir of a childhood spent on Tiree during WWII by Barry Kerr, 2015. Barry’s father, George (Jock) Kerr, was posted on the island as an RAF Signals and Telegraph Officer. Barry recalls the ‘black house’ he lived in at Balephetrish, the coal puffers, Cornaig school and prisoners of war.

Article in the Scots Magazine by Peter Myres recalling his maritime adventures around Tiree in 2009. Titled ‘Boat Daft on Tiree’ he writes about the ferries and puffers and a trip to Coll. Includes colour photographs of Travee from Balephuil, the ferry Claymore in 1962, hoisting a old Alvis car from the Claymore, the puffer Lascar, and Sheena Beck, Ruaig, with her children Drew, Robin and Margaret in 1962. Pages 408-412.
