Collection of articles, poems, photographs and illustrations by Alistair MacNeill of Hynish (b. 1940). Alistair recollects his experiences competing in the County Sports, Skerryvore Lighthouse, the Great China Tea Race of 1866, rock fishing with a bamboo rod, ‘The Wembly Wizards’ Scottish football team of 1928, gathering tangles (seaweed) for the kelp industry, Ben Nevis, a puffer coal boat at Hynish pier. Includes two covering letters with further information.
Emailed information about the possible location of the wreck of the Taeping tea clipper on Ladd Reef in the China Sea. The ship sank when it ran aground on its way to New York from China in 1871. The Taeping was previously commanded by Captain Donald MacKinnon, Heanish, who won the Great China Tea Race of 1866.
Information about the steam ferry ‘SS Chieftain’s Bride’ which was saved from sinking between Tiree and Mull in 1867 by the efforts of Captain Donald MacKinnon, Heanish, but in which he sustained internal injuries leading to his death and burial in Capetown, South Africa. Captain MacKinnon was master of the ‘Taeping’, which won the Great China Tea Race of 1866.

Framed oil painting of the tea-clipper ‘Taeping’, which was commanded by Captain Donald MacKinnon, Heanish (1827-1867), to victory in the Great China Tea Race of 1886. The painting was probably made in Hong Kong by artist Lai-Sung, who created many similar paintings of sailing ships during 1850-1885.
