Digitised copy of Memorial about the set of Benbuy (Beinne Bhuidhe), 1681. The Memorial discusses: the set (lease) of the land in 1678; numbers of livestock kept on the land (including ‘meares’, ‘deere’, cows and stirks); the management of deer on the land; salaries of the ‘taxmen’ (tacksmen – tenant farmers).

The Memorial names several tenants – McConochy, Nicoll McNicoll of Elerchemore and Dougall McEllure of Killblaan – and other place names. The second page contains further remarks on cows, ‘meares’ and ‘deere’ on the land and prospect of the 9th Earl of Argyll making an advance in exchange for half the ‘old benefite’.

Notes in a later hand record that document is ‘very interesting’ and that it contains the ‘handwriting of the 9th Earl of Argyll’ as well as old place names.

Digitised copy of Memorandum of the rental of Tiree, Morvern, Mull etc at Inveraray, October 1674. The document lists the value of Tirie (Tiree) in tirungs (an ounceland – a measure of land). Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll, took over Tiree and other lands from the MacLeans of Duart, Mull in 1674. The document mentions a payment to McLean for the building of the harbour of Tiree.

The names of tenants are included, along with details of augmentation, old rent and new rent. Names include Lamont, McLeod, Brown, McDonald, McLean, Campbell, MacPhail, MacCallum, McPhaden, McKinnon, McInnes, Reid, Bald, McIntyre, McNiven, McArthur.

Transcript of Inventory of Precognition submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal investigating the death of three cows and two horses at Cornaigmore, in June 1876. The transcript contains medical reports written by Alexander Buchanan into the death of the two horses. The animals may have been poisoned by strychnine.

The transcript contains notes on the rent paid by John Macphail, the value of his stock on the farm and some remarks on stock management.

Digitised copy of Copy memorial by Malcolm McLaurine, chamberlain of Tiree, to the Duke of Argyll, 1 Nov 1803, with subsequent correspondence with James Ferrier, the 5th Duke of Argyll’s lawyer (2 sets).

The main topic of the correspondence is the prospect of McLaurin being provided a farm at Balephuil. The correspondence also mentions: the farm occupied by McLaurin at Crossapol; the prospect of farms at Balephuil and Crossapol being divided into crofts; the prospect of converting the Chamberlain’s house at Crossapol into a church or inn and granary; the purchase of cattle and the distemper which can affect them; the subject of McLaurin ‘grasping’ at a farm in Balemartine; the Post Office; Mr McLean of Coll; value of land in Coll; mail lands; rent; Hector MacLean’s lease at ‘Haynish’; Balephuil March Dykes; planned improvements to the island.

Digitised copy of Petition by the tenants of Ballinoe [sic], Tiree, Jul 1803.

The petition is submitted by Alexander McLean, Duncan Campbell, John Macdonald, John Brown, John Macphaill, Alexander Campbell, John Campbell, John Bell, Neil Campbell, Hector Campbell ,and John McFarlane – all tenants in Balinoe. The petition mentions that the tenants feel ‘harassed and oppressed’; being prevented from cutting peat; the Factor and surveyor taking advantage of the petitioners by purchasing cattle at an ‘under value’; proclamations at the church door; being bound to provide services to the Factor and his servants; the lack of a miller to grind their grain.

The petition mentions increase in rents; the division of land into crofts; a penalty of £10; difficulty in disposing of cattle due to distemper; being ‘burtherned and oppressed” by needing to perform services to the Factor and his servants; request to reduce the rent.

Contains a table showing the farms in Tiree to be divided into mail lands (a unit of land tenure), and contains some remarks on how receptive the tenants were to the proposed changes.
