Long-service medal awarded to Inspector Hector MacLean (Eachann Ceitidh) of Torosa, Cornaigmore, from the Dumbartonshire Police department around 1952. One side of the medal bears Justice and reads “for exemplary police service”, while the other bears the head of King George VI. This version of the medal was awarded to full-time police officers with 20 years of service over the period 1951-1954. Includes cardboard presentation box.

Emailed information from Robyn Wiggs (Mackay), Australia, to Keith Dash, Australia, about Robyn’s ancestor Captain Colin Mackay (1839-1889) who was the Chief Constable of Argyllshire during the Crofter’s War of 1886, and who led the police expedition to quell the uprising on Tiree.
Extract: “… pertaining to the Crofter’s War 1886 which gives my great grandfather, Captain Colin Mackay, Chief Constable of Argyllshire, as the leader of the police expedition at that time. I know he died 17 September 1889, Cormly/Comly? Building Lochgilphead, Argyll. He is buried Achnabreac Cemetery Argyll. … indicate he was a serving member of the Police at the time of his death… His headstone was erected by the members of the constabulary… His widow, Susan Mackay (Whyte/White), with their children immigrated to Australia to join their eldest son. From there our family continues.”

Photograph of Angus MacLean in 2010. It was taken by Mary MacLean, and donated after his passing in 2013.
Angus was the driving force behind the creation of the volunteer fire brigade and was the Special Constable on Tiree for decades. He was a member of the Tiree Pipe Band, a Gaelic scholar, a local genealogist, a great storyteller and could fix anything. He lived all his life on Tiree. Angus was a founding member, past Chairman and a major donor to An Iodhlann’s collection.

Transcript of a court case in 1860 in which two Tiree men gave evidence
Copy of a handwritten transcript of a court case against Effie MacDonald (nee MacKinnon) of Erabus, Ardtun, (Ross of Mull?) dates 2 July 1860, who was prosecuted for repeatedly stealing peats from stacks belonging to Gilbert MacDonald, Balemartine, and James MacLean, Balemartine, on the Ardtun Moss on Friday the 22nd of ?. On 13th July 1860, at Tobermory, Effie was found guilty of theft and sentenced to 6 days of (?).

Willie served in the police force in Greenock and was an accomplished piper. Walter’s first piping tutor was his grandfather, Neil Lamont of Balemartine/Cornaig. The photograph was probably taken in around 1960 in Luton where Jock and Walter were police officers.

Written by Margaret Whitaker, wife of James McDowell`s g-g-g-grandson, in 2008. Includes a letter from Margaret Whitaker to An Iodhlann in January 2011.
