Transcript of a report of a theft submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal accusing Sarah McDonald (Cruidhgortan [Cruairtein], Tiree) and her sister Mary McDonald (Treshnish, Mull) of the theft of a pair of shoes in September 1856. The shoes, which belonged to Mary McLean (dairymaid to and residing with A. McLean Esq, Pennycross), were stolen from Pennycross (Pennyghael) Bridge in Mull. It is mentioned that McDonald’s father ‘emigrated to America some y[ea]rs ago’. The report provides physical descriptions of Sarah and Mary McDonald.
Transcript of an Execution of Deforcement by Alexander Macdonald (Sheriff Officer) on 1 August 1855 at the instance George Douglas Campbell, Duke of Argyll. The transcript contains details of attempts to evict of Duncan MacFee, his wife Ann MacLean or MacFee and their children from ther home in Kentra (Kintra) in Mull. An inventory of the goods and gear belonging to MacFee and MacLean, which includes ‘one Tyree Croggan’, (craggan) is provided.
Statements are provided by Alexander McDonald (Sheriff Officer, Bunessan) and Catherine McLeod or Black (wife of Lachlan Black, Kintra).

In this letter McLaurine discusses: timber claimed but not proved; sending a sample of wine from a cask lying in a barn; rents due; distilling; barley and coals; Clyde Packet; the island being cut off due to stormy weather; opening a weekly communication with the post office at Tobermory; the ground officer; methods to find a good school master; model of a wind miln [windmill]; poor enclosure on McLaurine’s farm.

One receipt references window tax for the Duke’s house in Tiree.

The document lists ‘Articles in the Rental of Tirie given up for the year 1743 which are either Desperate, or where the persons therein named have not Accepted of their possessions and so are Waste’ and a ‘List of Tacks or Obligations for Tacks given in Tirie’.

A digitised copy of the Argyll Estate Census of 1779, including a List of all the Inhabitants of Tirii and their age in September 1779. This census was commissioned in 1779 by the Duke of Argyll and includes the whole of Tiree, as well as lands in Mull, Iona and mainland Argyll. The information was collected and recorded by tacksmen or church ministers, and their style of recording varies. Relationships within households (e.g. wife, husband, daughter, son, etc.) are not recorded. Married women were recorded by their maiden surname and not by their husband’s surname.
The inside page of the volume contains a loose page with a ‘List of all the Inhabitants of Tiry 1787’, written by Reverend Archibald McColl and dated September 29th 1787. This table records the names of farms with the number of inhabitants divided into males, females, and boys and girls under six years old. McColl notes that ‘the great Increase of late seems mostly owing to the Return of Men from the Army and to Inoculation’.
