Transcript of papers detailing charges of sheep stealing, house breaking and theft against Archibald MacArthur (labourer, Antuim, Mull) and John Herbertson (labourer, Druimnacroish, Mull) in 1864. MacArthur and Herbertson are accused of stealing sheep from Baleuchrach in January 1864 and of stealing bottles of wine and champagne from Bellachroy on the evening of Friday 27 November 1863.

Part of the judicial declaration is missing, as well as some of the testimony of Mary McCulloch or Lamont, and the full testimony of Robert Lamont (merchant, Tobermory). The transcript provides details of sheep farming and sheep management and makes mention of old dates for Christmas and New Year. The transcript also mentions the process by which Gaelic was translated into English.

Transcript of Precognition of Witnesses against Flora Maxwell on charges of theft on 27 April 1863. Maxwell is accused of taking items to sell in Coll on the Tiree packet then absconding to Glasgow. Statements are provided by: Mary McQuarrie or Leuart (wife of and residing with John Leuart, Tobermory), Allan Cameron (Police, Tobermory) , John Lennard (hawker, Tobermory.

The surname Leuart is also spelled as Lennard in the transcription.

Transcript of Inventory of Precognition against Lachlan Galbraith on charges of fraud and Breach of the Peace in April 1862. Galbraith (teacher, Callert, Inverness-shire) was accused of misusing funds raised to buy passage to Canada, and of causing a breach of the peace in the Isle of Coll. The statements mention that Galbraith claimed to be noted for translating books from English into Gaelic.

Transcript of a police report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal by Finlay Fraser charging John Brown with Breach of the Peace in December 1861. Brown (crofter and fisherman, Kilmoluaig) assaulted Donald McDonald (son of Flora McKinnon, Kilmoluaig) in a field in Kilmoluaig. It is mentioned that McDonald called Brown a ‘water horse’. A statement is provided by Donald McDonald and is corroborated by:

Transcript of a Police Report against Effy McKinnon or McDonald on the charges of theft in June 1860. Effy McKinnon or McDonald (wife of John McDonald, Erabus, Ardtun) is charged with stealing peats from a peat stack belonging to belonging to Gilbert McDonald (crofter, Balemartine, Tiree) situated near the moss in Ardtun, Isle of Mull.

Transcript of Precognition of Witnesses submitted to Henry Nisbet, Tobermory Procurator Fiscal, regarding the sudden deaths of Malcolm McKinnon and Ann or Nancy MacDougall or Burnett on 3 October 1860. Transcript of a Police Report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal regarding the sudden death of Archibald Campbell (crofter, Iochdar [Jochdar], Ardtun, Isle of Mull) on 5 March 1860. Campbell had been engaged to marry Flora McInnes (Tiree). The report was submitted by John MacFarlane, Constable, and contains statements from:

James Campbell (fisherman, Iochdar, Ardtun. Brother of the deceased)
Margaret Campbell (wife of John Campbell, Iochdar, Ardtun)
John Campbell (fisherman, Iochdar, Ardtun. Brother-in-Law of deceased)
Neil Campbell (labourer, Achadaphail, Ardtun)

The report contains a short passage, perhaps unrelated, regarding the theft of coals on 16 February 1860.

Flora Campbell (daughter of Mary Ferguson, Taoslin, Ardtun; residing with Malcolm Black, sailor, Lower Ardtun) is charged with stealing peats from a peat stack belonging to Hugh McKinnon (crofter, Heanish, Tiree) on the shore of Lower Ardtun, Isle of Mull.

Statements are provided from Dugald Douglass (pauper, Lower Ardtun), Janet McLucas (residing with Widow McLucas, Lower Ardtun), Meron Smith (general servant, Lower Ardtun) and Constable John MacFarlane.

Transcript of a Police Report of an assault at Kenloch [Kinloch] charging Coll McDonald (Labourer or Lobster Fisher, Kinloch) with assault. McDonald is accused of attacking Hector Campbell in a dispute over a spade in October 1856. Statements are provided by Hector Campbell and Alexander McLean (Servant to Peter McNair InnKeeper, Kinloch).

A note in the margin contains a list of names and some references to cases presumably submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal. One of these reads ‘Death Arch[ibald] McLean, Tyree’.
