33 photographs and programmes of RAF Tiree theatre company performances during WWII

33 black & white photographs, and eight programmes, of performances by `The Tireans` and `The Reef Players`, the RAF personnel theatre groups who staged shows at RAF Tiree during WWII. Includes photocopy of one programme signed by all the performers (the original returned to the donor). Superb stage sets and costumes. The wardrobe supervisor, Stanly Bowman, was the donor`s father. (six photos, S100-S105, accessioned separately for display files).

Small narrow moulded glass bottle with long neck and cork, found in the wall of Alec and Morag MacKenzie`s house at Milton. Contains golden-brown particulate residue.

Metal rod used for drilling rock

Short steel rod or `jumper` with star-shaped end for drilling rock given to Dr Holliday by Iain Sinclair (Alasdair Sinclair, Brock`s brother) in response to An Iodhlann article in An Tirisdeach 2012. Shaft stamped with `Rawlplug star drill G – 15/16″ England`, and thought to be made after 1913 (see 2012.135.3).

Old glass `Schweppe` bottle

Tall, round-bottomed glass bottle found in the dump behind Baugh Surgey in 2012. Pale clear glass with large raised lettering all around bottle reading “J.Schweppe & Co., 51 Berners Street, Oxford Street, genuine superior, aerated waters”. Probably used for administering medicines.

Glass bottle from Holland washed up on the shore in 2012

Large square clear glass bottle with metal screw cap, found on a Tiree shore in 2012. Embossed “HOLLAND” on one side and “P.BOKMA` on other, with “106.8”, a star and other symbols on the bottom. Probably discarded overboard from a Dutch fishing vessel.

Black & white photograph of the temporary Decca Hifix radio camp at West Hynish in July 1966, on the left of the picture (on the site that is now Agrimarine`s gravel quarry). The thatched house and barns of the last croft on the road are on the right with stooks in the field. Skerryvore lighthouse is just visible on the horizon.

Photograph of the Decca Hifix radio mast and camp at West Hynish in 1966

Black & white photograph of the temporary Decca Hifix radio mast and camp at West Hynish in 1966. The radio was one of three used to accurately locate a Royal Navy survey vessel `HMS Mermaid` that was mapping the topography of the seabed in the shipping lanes between Scotland and Ireland. The other two radios were located at Malin Head and Islay. (For further details see 2012.125.5 filing cabinet 9 drawer 4)
