A transcript of the Inventory of Precognition regarding the deaths of nine fishermen in the Balephuil fishing diaster. This document provides statements from witnesses to a great storm in July of 1856 which claimed the lives of nine men from Balephuil: Archibald McLean (age 50), Donald McLean (aged 29), Colin McDonald (aged 40), Alexander McDonald (aged 42), Neil Kennedy (aged 18), Hugh Kennedy (aged 14) and Hugh McKinnon (aged 14), John Campbell (aged 29) and Malcom McArthur (aged 55).
Statements are given by witnesses to the tragedy as well as by relatives of the deceased, including: Malcolm McDougall (Fisherman, Balephuil); John MacPhail (aged 23, Fisherman, Balephuil); Isabella Black or MacLean (aged 40, widow of Archibald MacLean); George MacLean Esq (Tenant, Hynish); William Wilson (aged 28, Surgeon, Scarinish).
Transcript of a report of a theft submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal accusing Sarah McDonald (Cruidhgortan [Cruairtein], Tiree) and her sister Mary McDonald (Treshnish, Mull) of the theft of a pair of shoes in September 1856. The shoes, which belonged to Mary McLean (dairymaid to and residing with A. McLean Esq, Pennycross), were stolen from Pennycross (Pennyghael) Bridge in Mull. It is mentioned that McDonald’s father ‘emigrated to America some y[ea]rs ago’. The report provides physical descriptions of Sarah and Mary McDonald.
Transcript of an Execution of Deforcement by Alexander Macdonald (Sheriff Officer) on 1 August 1855 at the instance George Douglas Campbell, Duke of Argyll. The transcript contains details of attempts to evict of Duncan MacFee, his wife Ann MacLean or MacFee and their children from ther home in Kentra (Kintra) in Mull. An inventory of the goods and gear belonging to MacFee and MacLean, which includes ‘one Tyree Croggan’, (craggan) is provided.
Statements are provided by Alexander McDonald (Sheriff Officer, Bunessan) and Catherine McLeod or Black (wife of Lachlan Black, Kintra).

Digitised copy of Tiree mermaid – sworn statement of the discovery of a sea creature on the shore on Tiree, by Collin McNiven before James Maxwell, Justice of the Peace, 1813.
The statement (given by Colin MacNiven, tacksman of Grianal [Greenhill]) contains a detailed description of the discovery and appearance of the mermaid. MacNiven states that the mermaid was discovered eighteen years prior.
Digital copy of Description of Tiree from a book published in 1808. Consists of a handwritten transcription from a book, and includes mentions of: Island House, crops, livestock, caves at Ceanm-harra [Kenavara], the Reef, duns [brochs], St Patrick’s Chapel, the discovery of coins in ‘small earthen vessels’, and the discovery of human and horse skeletons in Cornaigbeg. The document also mentions that the ancient name of Tiree was Riog-Hachd-bar-Fathuim, ‘the Kingdom whose summits are lower than the waves’.
