Photograph of a painting of a sailing ship found in Rhum View, Vaul, and presumably belonging to Catriona MacKinnon who once lived there. Paintings like these were often painted by members of the crew and the sails signed by all in the crew (but not in this case). It is assumed that the painter or a crew member was linked to Rhum View.
The photograph includes notes made by Angus MacLean, Scarinish, in 1994, on the types of masts and sails, and an annotated sketch of the ship giving the names of the various sails.
1930s binoculars given to Archie MacLeod, Carrachan, Kilmoluaig, by one of the officers of the destroyer HMS Sturdy, which was wrecked on rocks at Sandaig in 1940. Archie (Erchie Charrachain) was home on leave from Gourock where he was skipper on one of the troop tenders based there during WWII. He was present at Sandaig during the rescue and carried ashore on his shoulders one of the Sturdy’s navigating officers who, in a show of gratitude, placed the binoculars around Archie’s neck. Archie’s son, also Archie (Gilleasbuig Carrachan), played with the binoculars as a boy. The binoculars remained in Carrachan until they were passed on to An Iodhlann in 2019.

Copies of the Royal Navy service record, death certificate and list of medals awarded to John Barnard Norton (Bunty) Whyte (1909-1942), son of Balephuil/Oban artists Duncan MacGregor Whyte and Mary Barnard Whyte, who was killed during an air raid on Southampton during WW2. The material includes correspondence from Navy Command to the donor.
Two handwritten letters dated 13th & 15th April 1906, sent by Elizabeth Ross to her mother, on the occasion of the family relocating from Edinburgh to Tiree, where her father, John Ross (1846-1925), was taking up the position of schoolmaster at Cornaigmore. The letters are written on the shipping company’s headed paper, and provide an insight into the logistics of moving to Tiree at that time.
Composition about the life and family of John Miller Matthew Geekie, who was a factor for the Duke of Argyll on Tiree. His sons Peter J,, John Neil, and Charles S. were born in Tiree in 1871-73. The family emigrated to Manitoba, Canada. Compiled by Charles A Muir, Ottawa, 2017.
Geekie’s wife Ann Campbell (1844-1918) was 1st cousin to Colina Georgina McLean Campbell, Balephetrish (1841-1930), wife of Doctor Alexander Buchanan, Baugh. Ann was the daughter of Donald Campbell Tacksman of Reef & Ulva. Colina was the daughter of Colin Campbell (Cailean Mhor) of Coll. Colin bought the two ends of Coll and owned the farms of Cornaig & Caolis. Both Colin Campbell (1798-1867) and Donald Campbell (1801-1884) were sons of Niel Campbell, Tacksman of Sunipol (1769-c1854).
