Letters between Katy Clayton, Taynuilt and An Iodhlann about items donated to An Iodhlann and the Clement`s family on Coll in the early 1900s.

Letter from Katy Clayton, Taynuilt, Argyll to Donald MacKinnon, Tiree, offering an old booklet of poems by Rev. Dugald MacEchern (2010.26.1) and prayer by Neil Munro (2010.26.2), and enquiring about the Clement family that lived at Gallanach, Coll, in the early 1900s. According to a search for the Clements family in the 1901 census (conducted and reported by Duncan Grant), Katy`s mother was Mary MacMillan Clement who was the adopted daughter of James and Mary Clement of Gallanach. Their servant, Margaret MacMillan, may have been the natural mother of Mary MacMillan Clement.

Update from the Atlantic Rising project 2010

Printout of email from Will Lorimer and sample internet content from the Atlantic Rising project. The Atlantic Rising team visit low-lying communities around the Atlantic edge that are being, or will be, affected by sea-level rises of 1m due to climate change. Includes Tiree, where Tiree school children and fishermen helped launch a huge message in a bottle. Will`s family have a second home at Hynish.

Large file folder containing various documents relating to the construction of the new community hall – An Talla. Belonged to Pete Blackhall, The Glebe, Scaranish, and titled `Pete`s Working File`. Includes contact list, budgets, minutes of committee meetings, quotations, plans and drawings.

Colour photograph of `The Cottage`, home of Sir Donald MacLean at Maraekakako, near Napier, New Zealand that was built in the 1860s to replace his former house `Doonside` that was destroyed by fire (see photo M198). Donald MacLean emigrated from Kilmoluaig to New Zealand in 1838, estabilishing a farm at Maraekakako and eventually becoming Minister for Native Affairs and Minister of Defense (see book 2009.84.3 “The best man who ever served the crown?”). The photograph was taken in 2004/5 by Alan Scarfe who included it in his MA History thesis about Douglas MacLean (son of Sir Donald) for Massey University.

Book “The Voyages of the Discovery”

Softback book about the history of Scott of the Antartic`s ship the “Discovery”. Tiree man Kenneth MacKenzie was appointed Chief Officer/First Mate of the Discovery for the first British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) in 1929. In 1930, he was promoted to Captain for the second BANZARE expedition. Text and photographs of Captain MacKenzie on pages 130, 134, 142.

Colour postcard showing Scott of the Antarctic`s ship ‘Discovery’ berthed at Dundee, Scotland in 2009. Kenneth (Coinneach a` Mhinisdair) was the grandson of Rev Duncan MacFarlane, the Baptist minister at the old Baptist manse in Baugh.

Archive film from 1972 about Round `The Mull`

DVD film from the Scottish Screen Archive about `Round `The Mull“. Filmed in 1972, colour, sound. A tour of the western isles on board the “Loch Carron” ferry in June 1972. Starting at Kingston Bridge, Glasgow then down the Clyde under the Erskine Bridge, Dumbarton Rock and Greenock. On to Arran, Fladda lighthouse and round the Mull of Kintyre. Then Tobermory, Coll and Tiree. A walk around Tiree includes footage of An Iodhlann when it was used as a dental surgery by dentist W.R.Weatherston. Then Barra, Lochboisdale and back to Oban.
