Transcript of a Police Report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal regarding charges of Assault and Breach of the Peace made against James Masterton, Neil McLachlan and Hugh McLean in Iona in 1862.

Masterton (foreman mason, North Bay Ardifinaig [Ardfenaig], Mull), McLachlan (blacksmith, North Bay, Ardifinaig [Ardfenaig], Mull) and McLean (merchant or inn keeper, Iona) are accused of assaulting James Black (master of the smack Albion of Campbeltown, laying at anchor in Bull Hole Anchorage, Creich, Ross of Mull) in front of ‘the cottage or inn’ in Iona. The Police Report is written by John McFarlane (constable, Bunessan).

Transcript of Inventory of Precognition against Lachlan Galbraith on charges of fraud and Breach of the Peace in April 1862. Galbraith (teacher, Callert, Inverness-shire) was accused of misusing funds raised to buy passage to Canada, and of causing a breach of the peace in the Isle of Coll. The statements mention that Galbraith claimed to be noted for translating books from English into Gaelic.

Transcript of Precognition of Witnesses submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal regarding the sudden death of John McNeill, March 1861. McNeill (aged 36, son of Niel McNeill, Balevullin) died following a short illness, and was attended on by Alexander Buchanan. Statements are provided from:

Transcript of a Police Report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal by Finlay Fraser (Police Constable, Tiree) charging Neil Lamont with malicious mischief on 12 October 1861. Lamont (merchant and cattle dealer, Cornaig) is accused of injuring Lauchlan McLean (farmer, Crosh [Croit na Croise, Kilmoluaig]) while riding a horse on the main road between Gott and Ballaphetrish. Statements are provided from:

Donald McLean (boatman, Kennovay)

The location of ‘Crosh’ is likely to be Croit na Croise in Kilmoluaig (see 1861 census).

Lamont is also charged with assaulting Duncan Cameron (seaman on board the Tiree packet), in the shop in ‘Toby’ occupied by Alexander Black (merchant) on 26 October 1861. Duncan Cameron (seaman), Hector McLean (shopman), John Lamont (porter) are named as witnesses. This second report is written by Allan Cameron.

Transcript of a Police Report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal by Finlay Fraser (Police Constable, Tiree), regarding the theft of a plaid in June 1861. Catherine and Marion McKinnon (Kilmoluaig) are charged with stealing or fraudulently retaining a plaid belonging to James McEachnie (travelling hawker) from the house of their father, Neil McKinnon (crofter, Killmoluaig). The appearance and value of the plaid are described in detail. It is noted that there is no evidence of the theft.

Transcript of a Police Report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal by Finlay Fraser (D.C., Tiree) charging Mary Campbell with theft on 18 or 19 September 1861. Campbell (pauper, Scarinish) is accused of stealing or taking a plaid from the house Donald Campbell (crofter, Heanish).

Transcript of a police report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal by Finlay Fraser charging John Brown with Breach of the Peace in December 1861. Brown (crofter and fisherman, Kilmoluaig) assaulted Donald McDonald (son of Flora McKinnon, Kilmoluaig) in a field in Kilmoluaig. It is mentioned that McDonald called Brown a ‘water horse’. A statement is provided by Donald McDonald and is corroborated by:

Transcript of a Police Report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal charging Donald McLean with Breach of the Public Peace on 13 April 1861.

McLean (boatman, Kenovay) is accused of committing a Breach of the Peace on board the Islesman Steamer. The report mentions a fight between Donald Campbell Esquire (the Reef) and Alexander McLean (Scarinish). Furthermore, the Stewart on board the Islesman Steamer is charged with the offense of the Act of License for supplying spirits. Alexander Buchanan Esquire (Scarinish), Archibald Brown (shipowner, Manal), Archibald McKinnon (shoemaker, Scarinish) and Neil McLean (fisherman, Caoles) are named as witnesses.

Transcript of a Police Report and Precognition of Witnesses regarding the sudden deaths of John Mcdonald, Lachlan Macdonald, Donald McDonald, John Orr and John McLean in April 1860.

The men left Manal on 27 April 1860 to fish ‘Relstay fishing bank’ near Stevenson’s Rock (described as four miles south west of the Skerryvore Lighthouse) on the fishing skiff ‘Father & Sons’. They were likely capsized whilst attempting to return home the following morning.
