Book ‘Am Briathrachan Beag’ by Calum MacPharlain, 1912. Not only was this Gaelic vocabulary intended to accompany Elementary Reading Books of the time, but it also contains words from the Popular Historical Sketches of Lachlan MacLean: ‘Rob Roy’, ‘William Wallace’ and ‘John Knox’. Signed by Isla MacDonald of the MacDonald/MacCorquodale/MacLean family of Kenovay.

Small, green-paper covered Gaelic booklet of religious questions and answers `Leabhar Aithghearr nan Ceist` edited by Iain Domhnullach, D.D., Ministeir ann an Dgire na Toisigheachd, in 1893. The booklet has been lovingly covered with stiff card from an old cigar/cigarette box, and signed by  ‘H Ray’ and by ‘R Macdonald’. It is also annotated in pencil throughout. Hardback book of Gaelic poetry collected by William J Watson, professor of Gaelic literature in Edinburgh in 1932. Signed on the inside front cover as belonging to Archibald Macdonald, Melness, and also Angus Macdonald.

Softback booklet ‘Prehistoric Rock Art in Scotland’, 2021. Produced and published by Scotland’s Rock Art Project (ScRAP) and Historic Environment Scotland to raise awareness and appreciation of the thousands of rock carvings made by early farming communities throughout Scotland over 4,000 years ago. Pages 27 and 43 include photographs of Dr John Holliday, Balephuil.

Softback book ‘The Last Laird of Coll’ by Mairi Hedderwick, 2011. The remarkable story of how Kenneth Stewart inherited the estate on the Isle of Coll. Burdened with debt, he spent his life trying to rebuild a livelihood from the estate. On the inside cover, the author has handwritten “For Philippa & Nick [Bristol]. Best wishes, Mairi Hedderwick, Isle of Coll, 2011”.

Hardback book ‘Scottish Sail – a forgotten era’ by Robert Simper, 1974. A photographic account of Scottish sailing ships that travelled domestic and world trade routes at the turn of the 19th century. The topsail schooner Mary Stewart is mentioned on page 35. The remains of her hull can still be seen in Scarinish Harbour.

Softback book ‘Virtue Mine Honour – Charles McLean’s War’, by John Holliday and Fiona Wilson, 2021. An account of a young RAF Pilot Officer’s life and death during WWII, based on letters home to family and friends. Charles McLean was the son of Donald Archibald McLean of Kenovay and Linlithgow.
