Collection of 26 photographic prints of the Sinclair family of Main Road, Balephuil, ca 1930-1970. The Sinclairs were on the donor’s father’s side of the family and include Johnsons and MacArthurs. His mother’s side of the family were MacKinnons of Adavale, Heanish. Seventeen of the photographs are accessioned separately as 2016.53.2~18.
Book ‘Twentieth-Century Crofting Schemes on Tiree and Coll’ by Bob Chambers, 2016, with foreword by Prof. Donald Meek, Caoles. Shortly before and shortly after WWI, over 100 new crofts were created on Tiree and Coll, and almost 40 existing crofts were enlarged. The impact on the islands was enormous, wide-ranging and long-lasting, particularly on Tiree.
Copy of the death certificate of Hector Cameron, Balephuil (1836-1883), who emigrated to Canada in the early 1860s with is brother Donald Cameron. Hector is buried at Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus, Ontario.

Also named on the gravestone: Effie Cameron (1839-1915), Duncan Cameron (1863-1892), Libby Cameron (1875-1898), Mary Cameron Arnold (1871-1899).

Two DVDs (part 1 and part 2) of a Channel 4 documentary ‘Edgeland’, produced in 1986, about new crofting legislation, the Crofters Commission and the future and history of crofting in the Highlands and islands. Topics include the Crofters’ War, peat cutting, mussel and salmon farming, fishing, forestry, the Cruachan Dam, the Invergordon smelter and the Outer Hebrides.
Part 1 includes footage of Tiree and interviews with local crofters Alec MacArthur, Heylipol, and Alastair MacInnes, Ruaig, and one with Peter Fairweather, the factor for Argyll Estates. With scenes of Balephetrish, hay-making, sheep shearing, a sheep sale at the old auction mart at Crossapol Farm, Balemartine, the airport, plane and fire service, Balephuil and Ruaig.

Extract from book The Tiree Bards / Na Baird Tirisdeach about the Balephuil fishing disaster of 1856. One boat belonged to Donald MacLean of Cheann-na-Creige at the south end of Traigh Bhi, Balephuil, where The Studio now stands. Plus some information about Ceit Chalein (Katie Dubh) of Am Bail’ Ur who helped Donald MacLean while his house was being built.

Large framed certificate from The Royal Humane Society, London, in 1869, belonging to Captain Archibald Brown, Mannal, for his actions and those of his crew in the rescue of the the surviving crew of a stricken schooner off Kenavara in Balephuil Bay in 1868. The vessel was the ‘Maria and Fanny’ of Milford, Wales, which was on its way between Ayr and Limerick with a load of coal. It was blown off course by a gale north of Ireland. The rescue was carried out at great risk to the captain and his crew. Captain Archibald and his crew were awarded medals of the Society.
