Ladies black wool Astrakhan (narrow shawl-collar) with fastening of two large buttons. Worn around the shoulders as an accessory, and named after the area in the Middle East from which the wool/fashion originated.

Chipped flint nodule
Flint nodules washed up on Balephuil beach from a source in the Irish Sea. The west coast of Tiree is one of the few places in the Inner Hebrides where flint can be found. The chipped piece demonstrates how sharp the edges can be.

Section of sub-sea power cable between Tiree & Gunna
Section of the sub-sea power cable that conducts electricity to Tiree from the mainland. The section was cut from between Gunna and Tiree when the power cable was broken and replaced in 2011. Three-phase current at 11,000 volts (compared with the Islay cable which operates at 33,000 volts). Yellow and black outer sheath, inner protection of ring of steel wires, followed by ring of lead insulation around inner electrical cable of three copper cores.

Black bodice blouse
Black silk beaded and boned bodice blouse with lace collar and cuffs. For a small woman. Purpose made pale cotton/linen pouch sewn into the left armpit containing hard round lump of brown substance. This is probably a herbal remedy, possibly a wad of thrift roots which were used to treat `Barr a’ chinn` a condition usually in children in which they go listless after a fright/shock. Blouse belonged to Mary MacLean, Kenovay (Mairi Brady`s maternal grandmother) and worn around 1910.
