CD and printed lyrics for a song ‘The Donald MacKinnon Story’ by Mavis Ellen Jackson and Robert Bray, 2012. The song recalls the Great China Tea Race of 1866, in which Captain Donald MacKinnon of Heanish (1827-1867), sailed his tea clipper ‘Taeping’ to victory.

Emailed information from Robyn Wiggs (Mackay), Australia, to Keith Dash, Australia, about Robyn’s ancestor Captain Colin Mackay (1839-1889) who was the Chief Constable of Argyllshire during the Crofter’s War of 1886, and who led the police expedition to quell the uprising on Tiree.

Extract: “… pertaining to the Crofter’s War 1886 which gives my great grandfather, Captain Colin Mackay, Chief Constable of Argyllshire, as the leader of the police expedition at that time.  I know he died 17 September 1889, Cormly/Comly? Building Lochgilphead, Argyll.  He is buried Achnabreac Cemetery Argyll.  … indicate he was a serving member of the Police at the time of his death… His headstone was erected by the members of the constabulary… His widow, Susan Mackay (Whyte/White), with their children immigrated to Australia to join their eldest son. From there our family continues.

Colour photograph of An Iodhlann committee members (L-R) Alasdair Sinclair, Brock (1923-2009), and Duncan Grant, Ruaig (born 1933), in An Iodhlann around 2006. Alasdair was one of the founding members of An Iodhlann, contributing a wealth of historical knowledge and material. Duncan is also on An Iodhlann’s committee and is the resident genealogist. The photograph was given to Duncan by a grateful visitor, Lynette MacLean-Crown, from New Zealand who was researching her family’s Tiree roots around 2010. A note from her is written on the back of the original print.

Letter from Charles MacLean, Edinburgh, to Duncan Gillespie, Gott, dated 2006, regarding enclosed texts and information about Charles’ 4x great grandfather Donald ‘The Pilot’ MacLean, Ruaig (born 1727), who piloted the French ship sent to rescue Bonnie Prince Charlie after the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

Two photocopies of a newspaper article ‘Some Historic MacLeans of Tiree – link with Prince Charlie’ from the Daily Express, 1930. The article begins with Malcolm MacLean of Hynish House and his cousin, Allan of Ruaig, whose ancestor was Donald ‘The Pilot’ MacLean of Ruaig (born 1727) who piloted the ship that rescued Bonnie Prince Charlie after Culloden in 1746.

Photocopy of a typed account of the Donald ‘The Pilot’ MacLean story published by his descendent (4x great grandson), Charles MacLean, Edinburgh, in the Clan MacLean magazine around 1986. The account is based on Charles’ great-great-grandfather’s hand-written account of the event written around 1900 (see 2016.6.1), and includes notes and analyses of the handwritten account.
