Information about Ian Lachlan MacFadyen, Ontario (1924-1945), son of Alexander MacFadyen, Barrapol (1887-1959)

Information and news articles about Flying Officer Ian Lachlan MacFadyen (1924-1945) of Ontario, Canada, who died when the plane he was piloting crashed in Ireland during WWII. His father Alexander MacFadyen emigrated from Tiree in the early 1900s with his brothers. Alexander`s parents were Lachlan MacFadyen, Barrapol, and Isabella McDonald, Kirkapol.

Navy News (Jan. 2011) article about the `Sturdy cairn` built at Sandaig in 2010 to commemorate the sailors who died and survived, and their rescuers, when the destroyer HMS Sturdy ran aground there in Oct. 1940. Also a letter from Dawn Springett, Australia, a relative of one of those who drowned, who sent in the article.

Austalian press cuttings about RAF Tiree during WWII

Two Australian newspaper articles printed from the internet: (1) About the family of Morrie Foster`s gift of his flight logbook to An Iodhlann in 2007. Foster served in 518 Met Squadron, Tiree, during WWII. (2) About Les Lambert, Australian firefighter who was a wireless operator aboard RAF Halifaxes based on Tiree during WWII. Both articles highlight the link between RAF Tiree and the success of the D-day landings.
