Sepia photograph of `Doonside` the original home of Sir Donald MacLean, at Maraekakako, near Napier, New Zealand. Probably taken in the late 1850s. Donald MacLean emigrated from Kilmoluaig to New Zealand in 1838, estabilishing a farm at Maraekakako and eventually becoming Minister for Native Affairs and Minister of Defence (see book 2009.84.3 “The best man who ever served the crown?”). The house was built by him but was subsequently destroyed by fire. It was replaced by the present building known as `The Cottage` (see photo 2010.20.2 ; M199).

Softback book about the history of Scott of the Antartic`s ship the “Discovery”. Tiree man Kenneth MacKenzie was appointed Chief Officer/First Mate of the Discovery for the first British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) in 1929. In 1930, he was promoted to Captain for the second BANZARE expedition. Text and photographs of Captain MacKenzie on pages 130, 134, 142.
Archive film from 1966 about `A Dentist`s Road to the Isles`
DVD film from the Scottish Screen Archive about `A Dentist`s Road to the Isles`. Filmed in 1966, colour, sound. Film journal of dental surgeon John Cadden`s trip around the isles to treat patients. Starting at his home in Dumbarton, then to Oban via the Clyde and the Crinan Canal on his boat “Contance”. Then to Tobermory for the first of his treatments, followed by Rum and Eigg. Many close-up views of dental patients undergoing treatment. He also treated patients on Tiree, Islay, Jura, Colonsay and Soay, but not on this trip.
