Ornate, leather-bound photograph album with brass clasp containing 21 formal portraits of the MacDonald/Campbell family, relatives and friends, from the late 1800s, plus one of the gravestone of Archibald Campbell and a memorial card with photo of Archibald Campbell, who died in 1899. No other information is available. From a collection from Mannal House. The photos are accessioned separately (see 2015.55.4 to 2015.55.19; V192-9 & W100-7).
Extract from book The Tiree Bards / Na Baird Tirisdeach about the Balephuil fishing disaster of 1856. One boat belonged to Donald MacLean of Cheann-na-Creige at the south end of Traigh Bhi, Balephuil, where The Studio now stands. Plus some information about Ceit Chalein (Katie Dubh) of Am Bail’ Ur who helped Donald MacLean while his house was being built.

Newspaper article about the Balephuil fishing disaster, 1856
Photocopy of a newspaper article from the Glasgow Herald, July 1856 (and typed transcript by donor), about the loss of nine fishermen in a storm off Balephuil in 1856. Thirty-nine men set off fishing in six boats but were overtaken by a gale. Thirty out of thirty-three men survived in three boats that made it to Islay. All six were lost from one boat that came ashore on Coll.

Cast iron strainer
Heavy cast iron hand-strainer, probably used for removing large items such as vegetables and meat from the stewing pot, or for slowly melting more solid substances. Designed so that the stock/substance drained down the herring-bone channels into the central bowl from which it could then be poured.

Dark leather-bound Gaelic bible (1831) given to John MacKinnon, Lodge Farm, Kirkapol, by Lady Victoria Campbell (the Duke of Argyll`s sister) on July 6th 1910, and inscribed by her “in memory of much faithful service to his friend” and verse (3) of the English hymn `The Saints of God!` by W.
