Transcript of Precognition of Witnesses investigating the dead body of a boy cast ashore in Sandaig on 24 April 1870.

The report contains statements from Donald MacKinnon (son of Hugh MacKinnon, Sandaig), George MacKinnon (son of Hugh MacKinnon, Sandaig), Malcolm Campbell (labourer, Sandaig), John McLean (farmer, Balemeanach [Middleton]), Donald McLean (crofter, Gortendonald), and Alexander Buchanan (surgeon, Baugh). Buchanan also provides a medical report.

This item contains some graphic details about the body of the child, estimated to be eight or nine years old. There are descriptions of the clothing upon the body.

Transcript of a Police Report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal by Finlay Fraser, (Detective Constable) regarding the sudden death of Archibald McDonald at Heanish in August 1859. McDonald, died near ‘Reef Cottage’ while walking home from Heanish with his son, Lachlan McDonald.

Digital copy of ‘The Early Years’, an autobiography by Captain Kenneth Norman MacKenzie, Baugh (1897-1951), Master of the ‘Discovery‘. Written during 1949-1951, Kenneth writes of his life on Tiree as a boy and his eventful career at sea. Includes an addendum written in 2018 by his son, Malcolm MacKenzie. Photocopies of (1) a cartoon and photographs from an Australian newspaper, 1930, featuring Captain Kenneth Norman MacKenzie (1897-1951), Master of the ‘Discovery’, and his crew depicted as penguins, (2) newspaper articles about the voyage of the ‘Discovery’, and (3) a family tree showing connections between Kenneth MacKenzie and MacFarlanes of Balinoe, MacKinnons of Vaul and MacKinnons of Balephetrish. Kenneth’s great-great-grandfather was William MacFarlane (1777-1863), tenant at Balinoe.

Small photograph of an oil painting of the yacht ‘Oceana’ sailing off the coast of Naples in around 1929, with Mount Vesuvius erupting in the background. The Oceana was wrecked at the west end of Crossapol beach in 1949, and the cause of much intrigue at the time. Painted by the  Italian artist L. Papaluca (1890-1934), who was well-known for his paintings of ships. The painting belonged to Robert Polson of Badachro (Gairloch) who captained the yacht.
