Photocopy of a black & white photograph of Captain Kenneth MacKenzie (1897-1951), Chief Officer aboard the famous Antarctic research vessel ‘Discovery‘. Kenneth was appointed Chief Officer/First Mate of the Discovery for the first British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) in 1929. In 1930, he was promoted to Captain for the second BANZARE expedition. Kenneth (Coinneach a` Mhinisdair) was the grandson of Rev Duncan MacFarlane, Baptist minister at Baugh. Kenneth’s mother, Catherine MacFarlane married Duncan MacKenzie of Inverary.
Photograph of a painting of a sailing ship found in Rhum View, Vaul, and presumably belonging to Catriona MacKinnon who once lived there. Paintings like these were often painted by members of the crew and the sails signed by all in the crew (but not in this case). It is assumed that the painter or a crew member was linked to Rhum View.
The photograph includes notes made by Angus MacLean, Scarinish, in 1994, on the types of masts and sails, and an annotated sketch of the ship giving the names of the various sails.
Copies of the Royal Navy service record, death certificate and list of medals awarded to John Barnard Norton (Bunty) Whyte (1909-1942), son of Balephuil/Oban artists Duncan MacGregor Whyte and Mary Barnard Whyte, who was killed during an air raid on Southampton during WW2. The material includes correspondence from Navy Command to the donor.
Scanned copy of a telegram sent by Captain John Brown (1902-1986), Balevullin, to his parents in Cornaig, after being shipwrecked on Tuskar Rock off the east coast of Ireland in 1927. Includes a page of background information. John Brown was 25 years old at the time and could not swim.
He met his future wife when his ship, the Baron Belhaven, was being repaired in Barry Docks (west of Cardiff) in 1941. A bomb had dropped down the funnel when sailing in convoy out of Liverpool during WW2.

Genealogical information about the descendants and ancestors of Hector MacKinnon, Vaul (1801-1864), and his wife Margaret MacKinnon, Balephuil, who emigrated to Australia with their four children in 1853. They were living in Balephuil in 1841 before moving to Barra in the mid-1840s, where their fourth child was born. By 1851, the family were living at Petty in Invernesshire. They sailed for Australia from Inverness on board the ‘Bloomer’ in 1853. Includes emailed correspondence regarding links to distant relatives living on Tiree in 2018: MacFadyen, Scarinish; MacKinnon, Balemartine; Cameron, Kirkapol(?).
