Newspaper article about the sinking of a boat carrying 26 people from Tiree in 1828.

Extract from a letter from a man on Coll to a man in Glasgow dated 31st May 1828, published in the Glasgow Herald and extracted by The Times. On the 29th of May 1828 a boat carrying 26 people from Tiree struck rocks near the Treshnish Isles after a peat-cutting expedition to Mull. Twenty-one died. They were Hector John Cameron and his sister Mary Cameron, Charles MacLean, Mary MacDonald, Jean Campbell, Mary Carlisle, William MacLean and his wife, Donald MacLean and his sister Mary MacLean, Catherine Galbraith and her brother Malcolm MacInnes, Alexander Rainey, Alexander Cameron, Neil MacDonald and his daughter.

Newspaper article, 1986, “Of seers, witches and ghosts” about 19th century seer John MacLean

Original and photocopy of a newspaper article by Niall M. Brownlie, Barrapol, about John MacLean, Ruaig & Hough, a well known 19th century `seer` of the future who foresaw the first and second world wars, the arrival of the RAF on Tiree, the division of farms into crofts and the disappearance of townships behind Ben Hough (which were buried by wind-blown sand?).

Newspaper obituary from 1909 for Ann MacKinnon, Canada, formerly Tiree

Photocopy of an obituary from a Canadian newspaper dated June 1909, for Mrs Ann MacKinnon (formerly Clark, nee MacDonald) who was born on Tiree in about 1836. Ann emmigrated to Brock township, Ontario, with her father Donald MacDonald and seven siblings shortly after her mother Eliza Lamont died. Ann moved to Bruce County with her first husband, Malcolm Clark, with whom she had two children, then to Brandon Hills with her second husband Hugh MacKinnon (also originally from Tiree), with whom she had eight children.

Photocopied newspaper article from 1986, and accompanying letter to Archie MacKinnon, Cornaigmore, from his cousin in Australia, Sept 2009. A friend of Archie`s cousin had given his cousin the newspaper article and letter. The article reports Roderick Nicolson`s 95th birthday celebrations at the Cabarfeidh Hotel, Balallan and of his teaching career, including his first teaching position as Headmaster of a primary school on Tiree in 1913. The accompanying letter gives details of his family on Lewis.
