RAF Pilot Officer Charles McLean, the grandson of Lachlan MacLean of Kenovay, went missing in action over the English Channel during WWII. This is his only known painting. Two large, well worn books titled ‘Songs of the Hebrides, volume 1’ and ‘More Songs of the Hebrides’ belonging to Sidney Herbert Sime (1865-1941), who was an English artist best known for his satirical artwork during the late Victorian period. One copy is signed S H Sime on an inner page, while the other is embossed S.H.S. on the cover.
Green bakelite and glass Bel Jubilee Cream Maker belonging to Mabel Kennedy, Balephuil (Mabel MacArthur’s mother). Made by Blacklers of Liverpool in 1934-6. Includes an instructions leaflet (stored separately).
Steel latch hook with wooden handle belonging to tailor Malcolm MacArthur, Balemartine. Latch hooks are traditionally used in rug-making.
White dinner plate marked with ‘RAF’ under a blue crown, made by W Adams and Sons, England. Used in NAAFI canteens on Tiree during WWII.
Copy of the Swiss magazine Passé Simple containing an article (in French) about RAF airman Léonard Revilliod, one of the 16 flight crew who lost their lives in a mid-air collision over Island House in 1944. Léonard was the grandson of the first President of Czechoslovakia, and served with 518 Squadron based on Tiree. Written by Denis Dumoulin in 2020.
