Collection of Clydesdale stud books 1933-1948

Collection of 11 Clydesdale horse stud books belonging to Alec MacLean, Rubha Cottages, Tiree, listing foals, mares and stallions by stud number, for the years: 1933, 1934, 1936, 1938, 1940, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1948. Includes list of stallions that travelled districts or served mares, list of winners of the society`s premiums, horse obituary, roll of members of Clydesdale Horse Society, index of horses, index of breeders and owners.

Clydesdale pedigree cards, photos and notice of meeting

Collection of four Clydesdale horse pedigree cards, two black & white photos of Clydesdale horses (with John MacLean, Cornaigbeg, Tiree?), an invitation to a meeting of the Tiree Heavy Horse Breeding Society in Scarinish School on 20th Feb. 1943 addressed to Mr John MacLean, The Brae, Cornaigbeg, Tiree, and a newspaper cutting “Clydesdale Export Trade Revives”. All items were between the pages of a collection of Clydesdale horse stud books from 1933 to 1948 belonging to Alec MacLean, Tiree.

Photograph of the the first scheduled plane to land at the Reef in 1935/36

Black & white photograph of a bi-plane on the Reef machair in 1935 or 1936. It was the inaugural flight of the scheduled air service to the island from Glasgow and was greeted by a large crowd. The children, including Douglas MacLeod (Ballevullin & Sandaig) were presented with a box of sweets. Douglas is the boy running by the port wing. The photo was taken by his father (copyright Douglas I. MacLeod). (Original stored in filing cabinet 9 drawer 2)

Copy of letter containing information about Captain Donald Archibald MacCallum of Tiree, ca 2005

Photocopy of a letter from “George” to Donald MacLeod about a convoy of Navy vessels torpedoed during World War II. Includes information on Captain Donald Archibald MacCallum of Tiree, was lost when his ship “Designer” was sunk on 9 June 1941.

Schoolhouse of Ruaig and some of the gardners at work, (3) A Kelp-Gatherer, Tiree. This is the last ???? ???? left on the island, (4) School Children, Tiree, (5) The Cottage where Neal? Died and which he refused to leave for a Glasgow Hospital.

Admission Register for Balemartine School 1945-1971

Admission register for pupils attending Balemartine School from 20 Sept 1945 to 13 April 1971, giving date of admission, pupils’ full name and date of birth, name of parent or guardian, relationship, address, name of last school, date of leaving, and cause of leaving or where gone. Birth dates range from 1933 to 1966. On loan to An Iodhlann from Tiree High School, Cornaig. Also contains loose sheets of handwritten notes about (1) new address of Mrs J Grieve, mother of Carol Ann and Alexander Moncrieff Grieve, when they left Tiree for Kirkaldy, Fife, (2) the date of birth and religion of brothers James and David McCrae of West Hynish, and the name of their guardian – Bella MacKinnon. Lists the previous school of 80 boarded-out children. Includes separate daily register for year ending July 1971 recorded by teacher Mary MacPhail. Also leaflet produced by wartime authorities “War Emergency Information and Instructions” (photocopy 2009.56.2, filing cabinet 9, drawer 2).
