Transcript of a Police Report submitted to Henry Nisbet, Tobermory Procurator Fiscal, regarding the discovery of a male body on the shore at Greenhill opposite Greenhill House on 20 February 1860. It is speculated in the report that the body was one of the men lost on board the Swan of Belfast, which was wrecked on 19 January 1860. The body was found by Walter Carmichael (labourer, Greenhill). The report is submitted by Finlay Fraser, Detective Constable.

Transcript of Police Report and Precognition of Witnesses regarding the sudden death of Archibald MacInnes and Charles MacLean in February 1860. MacInnes and MacLean drowned when a wave hit their boat while fishing for lobsters on an open skiff near Bealach na Ciste on the Isle of Soay. Duncan MacInnes (brother of Archibald MacInnes, Ruaig) survived the accident. The report contains descriptions of clothing on the bodies of the sailors. Copies of the registrations of the deaths are also included.

Transcript of a Police Report against Flora Campbell on the charges of theft in April 1860. Flora Campbell (daughter of Mary Ferguson, Taoslin, Ardtun; residing with Malcolm Black, sailor, Lower Ardtun) is charged with stealing peats from a peat stack belonging to Hugh McKinnon (crofter, Heanish, Tiree) on the shore of Lower Ardtun, Isle of Mull.

Transcript of a police report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal regarding the theft of items from a trunk on board the steamer Islesman travelling between Lochboisdale and Tiree in October 1858. Statements are provided from Mary Maclean (daughter of Donald McLean, Kenovay), and Mrs Catherine Maclean or MacDonald (wife of Neil MacDonald, Kilbride, South Uist). Maclean reports a previous theft on board a steamer between Tiree and Lochboisdale.

Transcript of a police report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal charging Flora McPhail or Shediack of Breach of the Peace in May 1859. McPhail (Earnal) is charged with cursing, threatening and abusing Archibald McKinnon (cotter, Earnal). Statements are provided by Archibald McKinnon and Flora Carmichael (aged 12 years, daughter of Procurator Fiscal Archibald Carmichael, Earnal).

Transcript of a police report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal charging Anne McInnes with the crime of theft, in July 1859. McInnes (Manal) admits to taking white worsted stockings belonging to Catherine Currie from the bleaching green at Moss.

Transcript of a report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal regarding an assault in Achadaphail farm, Ardtun, on the Isle of Mull in September 1859. Peggy or Margaret Morrison is accused of attacking Mary Campbell with a pair of iron tongs and using profane and ‘unbecoming’ language against her.

Transcript of a Police Report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal by Finlay Fraser, (Detective Constable) regarding the sudden death of Archibald McDonald at Heanish in August 1859. McDonald, died near ‘Reef Cottage’ while walking home from Heanish with his son, Lachlan McDonald.

Transcript of Inventory of Precognition against John McMillan and Donald MacPhail on charges of Housebreaking and Theft at the house of Niel Kennedy at Balevullin in December 1859. £10 was stolen from Kennedy’s house during the burglary.

Many of the statements were originally given in Gaelic but are transcribed in English. William Robertson, Esquire Sheriff Substitute of Argyllshire, writes that John McMillan’s statement was given in the Gaelic language and translated into English by the Judge Examiner, and then read back to the defendant in Gaelic.
