The U-boat in which both had been taken PoW in 1943, was sunk by American bombers days later with the loss of all lives.

Two photocopies of a news article about recollections of Donald MacKinnon, Tiree, who captained the winning tea clipper “Taeping” during the Great China Tea Race of 1866. The original photocopy was on display in the Thatched Cottage Museum, Sandaig, until its closure and sale in 2010.

Text reads “London: Published Oct. 1st 1866 by Wm Foster, 17 Billiter Street E.C.; Clipper Ship “Taeping”, 767 tons; D. MacKinnon Commander; In the china sea in company with the “Fiery Cross” (R. Robinson Comr) on their homeward voyage from Foo-chow-Foo to London, June 1866; To Alex Rodger Esq. (Owner) this print is most repsectfully dedicated by his obedient servant Wm Foster.” The print was bought from an outdoor market in Ballymena, N. Ireland.

Tiree man Kenneth MacKenzie was appointed Chief Officer/First Mate of the Discovery for the first British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) in 1929. In 1930, he was promoted to Captain for the second BANZARE expedition. Text and photographs of Captain MacKenzie on pages 130, 134, 142.
