Digitised copy of James Turnbull’s Survey of Tiree, titled ‘Plan of the Island of Tiree in Argyleshire the Property of His Grace The Duke of Argyll. Surveyed and Plan’d Anno 1768/9 by James Turnbull’. The map depicts the Tiree landscape before the modern crofting landscape was created in the nineteenth century, showing clusters of large farming townships separated by rigs of infield and outfield cultivation, common grazing, ‘old danish forts’ and other antiquities.

Alison Diamond, Archivist at Inveraray Castle, is currently looking for volunteers who would like to transcribe late 18th and 19th century handwriting – and documents primarily relating (but not exclusively) to Tiree and Mull. Some of these documents fall within the remit of An Iodhlann’s ‘Written in the Landscape‘ project and the transcriptions will become a valuable addition to our archive. Alison says “Have a look at the examples shown here and, if you think this is something that you might enjoy, drop me an email to . I can’t promise that the documents will always be this neat…”
This summer we are displaying a new addition to the archive – a large, framed painting of one of Tiree’s former factors, plus copies of items brought to An Iodhlann through the Written in the Landscape project.

It is only a week now until the Argyll Archives team brings their eagerly-awaited Written in the Landscape roadshow to Tiree. This exciting exhibition of rarely-seen Tiree objects will open on the evening of Monday 13th May and run until the evening of Thursday 16th May. An Iodhlann will host a mini-exhibition each day (10am – 4pm), while a larger exhibition of treasures, plus talks and workshops, will be held in the evenings in An Talla (7pm – 9.30pm). The busy people at Argyll Estates’ archive at Inveraray Castle have just sent us this latest update on the Written in the Landscape project, including their plans to bring over a number of items not seen before on Tiree during 13 – 17 May 2019.
We recently received several digitised documents from Inveraray Archives through the Written in the Landscape project, and there are plans for an exhibition of items from the archive next spring. Please click here for more information.
Argyll Estates’ archivists Ishbel MacKinnon and Jackie Davenport announced today that “Our funding application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for Written in the Landscape has been successful! We have been awarded up to £100,000, which represents approximately 33% of the total project costs. Most of the remaining funding has already been pledged, so we are now very optimistic that the project will go ahead in early 2016 and run for three years, to December 2018.”
Written in the Landscape is an amazing new project that will allow publication of some of the Duke of Argyll’s family’s historical treasures for the first time. Papers dating back to 1679, which have been kept in dusty bundles in a locked storeroom in Inveraray Castle, will be catalogued and restored. An Iodhlann will then be allowed to digitise the Tiree-relevant documents for our archive. We are hoping to get started in mid-2016.
