Small photograph of an oil painting of the yacht ‘Oceana’ sailing off the coast of Naples in around 1929, with Mount Vesuvius erupting in the background. The Oceana was wrecked at the west end of Crossapol beach in 1949, and the cause of much intrigue at the time. Painted by the Italian artist L. Papaluca (1890-1934), who was well-known for his paintings of ships. The painting belonged to Robert Polson of Badachro (Gairloch) who captained the yacht.
Thirty-eight colour slides of scenes of Tiree photographed by Harry Rutter, Balemartine, in the late 1950s-1960s. Harry planned to make postcards of the images for sale from his shop in Balemartine. Scenes include beaches, townships, Tiree Pipe Band, cattle show and the airport.
Sepia portrait photograph of Sam Stevenson, Scarinish, in Highland Light Infantry uniform with two army friends in around 1915. On the reverse, is handwritten ‘Dear Jean, I am yours always, with love, Sam’. Jean (Jane) Campbell and Sam were married in 1914, just before he joined up.
Around 100 black and white photographs from a large red album titled ‘The Life and Times of Charles McLean’, collected and perserved by his family. Charles (1917-1941) was the son of Donald Archibald McLean, Kenovay and Linlithgow. An RAF Pilot Officer, he went missing in action over the English Channel during WWII. Black & white photograph of Alexina Mary McLean (1926-1929), daughter of Donald Archibald McLean, Kenovay, in around 1929, and the family gundog, Flossie. Alexina was named after her Uncle and Aunt, Alexander Walker and Mary McLean (sister of Donald Archibald), who gave Alexina a present of a doll, which was kept long after her death at the age of three.
