Softback book ‘Eilean Uaine Thiriodh’ by Margaret Bennett and Eric Rose, 2014. ‘The Green Isle of Tiree’ is a biography of Ethel MacCallum who, in 1942, was evacuated from an orphanage in Glasgow to the Island of Tiree. She became fluent in Gaelic and, with her natural gift for music and song, was encouraged to write her own compositions. The book includes some of her original work on a CD.
DVD of TV programme Cairdeas Cogaidh in Gaelic and English, featuring Prof. Donald Meek documenting the life and death of his relative, John MacDonald of Caoles, and John ‘Jock’ Stewart who served with John MacDonald in France when John was killed in action in 1917. Donald begins with papers kept in his family’s home in Caoles for 100 years, then travels to John’s grave in France, and on to Africa where Jock lived and worked as a vet.
Softback book ‘Flowers in the Snow’ by Gwyneth Hoyle, 2001. A biography of the plant collector Isobel Wylie Hutchinson who travelled the northern latitudes of the world in the first half of the 1900s in search of plants. Her travels through Scotland, Iceland, Greenland, Alaska were by various and interesting means. Includes Tiree.
Printed copies of the Beveridge Diaries 1896-1897: (1) scanned directly from Erskine Beveridge’s notebooks held in the Carnegie Library in Dunfermline, and (2) typed transcripts made by Lesley Ferguson, Head of Collections, RCAHMS. Beveridge travelled around Scotland in the second half of the 19th century, photographing and writing about the places he visited, including Tiree.
