Handwritten copy of the official ‘Notification of Death’ for Charles McLean (1917-1941), son of Donald Archibald McLean, Kenovay, dated at the Air Ministry 17 September 1942, 10 months after Charles went missing in action over the English Channel, while serving as a Pilot Officer with the RAF during WWII. His body was never recovered. The note states  “Original to Alister 24/9/68”, Alister being Donald Archibald McLean’s brother. Large, annotated, black & white photograph of the personnel of D. Flight, RAF No. 3 Squadron, April 1940. Signed by all members of the crew, including Pilot Officer Charles McLean (1917-1941), son of Donald Archibald McLean, Kenovay.  80% of those pictured perished during WWII. Their surnames are written on the back of the photo. Charles (2nd row from back, 3rd from left) went missing in action over the English Channel in November 1941. The clothing was either her own, or for a doll given to her by Donald’s sister Mary and her husband Alexander Walker. Life-size doll given to Alexina Mary McLean (1926-1929), daughter of Donald Archibald McLean, Kenovay, in around 1928. Unusually, the doll has a china face and brown eyes. It was a present from Donald’s sister Mary and her husband Alexander Walker, and was kept by the family long after Alexina’s death at the age of three. Part of a large collection of items belonging to and about Donald Archibald McLean, Kenovay (1890-1981), and his family.
