Transcript of Precognition of Witnesses regarding the discovery of bodies on board the wreck of the Francis of St Ives and on the shore of the Isle of Coll, November 1860. The Francis of St Ives, a three masted vessel, was wrecked off the shore of Caoles in Coll, ‘between Ellen oare and Caol’. Descriptions are given of tattoos upon the body of the sailor on board the ship, as well as the clothes he was wearing.

In a letter attached from James MacColl (Interim Registrar of Births and Deaths for the District of Coll) to Henry Nisbet (Tobermory Procurator Fiscal), MacColl writes that the body of Mrs Fowler, a ‘pauper’ residing at Torastan in Coll, was discovered on the 18th October 1860 at some distance from her own house.

Transcript of precognition of witnesses against Robert Macdonald on charges of fraud, August 1860. MacDonald (teacher, Kilbride) was appointed as Interim Inspector of Poor for the Island of Coll. Statements are provided from John Smeaton (miller and farmer, Acha), Donald MacDonald (farmer, Arinagour), John MacLean (Mippost). The document contains a copy of Cash Received and Payments made by Robert MacDonald from November 1859 to May 1860.

Transcript of a police report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal regarding the theft of items from a trunk on board the steamer Islesman travelling between Lochboisdale and Tiree in October 1858. Statements are provided from Mary Maclean (daughter of Donald McLean, Kenovay), and Mrs Catherine Maclean or MacDonald (wife of Neil MacDonald, Kilbride, South Uist). Maclean reports a previous theft on board a steamer between Tiree and Lochboisdale.

Transcript of a police report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal charging Flora McPhail or Shediack of Breach of the Peace in May 1859. McPhail (Earnal) is charged with cursing, threatening and abusing Archibald McKinnon (cotter, Earnal). Statements are provided by Archibald McKinnon and Flora Carmichael (aged 12 years, daughter of Procurator Fiscal Archibald Carmichael, Earnal).

Transcript of a police report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal charging Anne McInnes with the crime of theft, in July 1859. McInnes (Manal) admits to taking white worsted stockings belonging to Catherine Currie from the bleaching green at Moss.

Transcript of a police report accusing Lachlan McInnes of assault in October 1859. McInnes (seaman, Arinagour, Island of Coll) is accused of assaulting Archibald McNeil (mason, Breachacha, Island of Coll) at Beg Field near Fouterailt [?] Isle of Coll. The report is submitted by Finlay Fraser, police constable in Tiree. Statements are provided from:

Peggy or Margaret Morrison is accused of attacking Mary Campbell with a pair of iron tongs and using profane and ‘unbecoming’ language against her.

Transcript of a Police Report submitted to Tobermory Procurator Fiscal by Finlay Fraser, (Detective Constable) regarding the sudden death of Archibald McDonald at Heanish in August 1859. McDonald, died near ‘Reef Cottage’ while walking home from Heanish with his son, Lachlan McDonald.

William Robertson, Esquire Sheriff Substitute of Argyllshire, writes that John McMillan’s statement was given in the Gaelic language and translated into English by the Judge Examiner, and then read back to the defendant in Gaelic.
