Murdoch became a policeman and moved to South Africa with his brother Donald MacKinnon, also a policeman, in around 1903-06. Murdoch died in Cape Town, aged 31.

Donald’s parents were Roderick MacKinnon (1833-1879) and Marion Brown (1840-1924). He left Tiree in around the late 1890s and worked as a police constable in Glasgow. He married Annie MacLeod in June 1902 and they had a daughter, Isabella MacKinnon, who was born in Glasgow on 30 March 1903. Sometime between 1903 and 1906 the family emigrated to South Africa where Donald and his brother, Murdoch MacKinnon, worked as policemen. There, Donald and Annie had another two children: Joan and Marion. Donald died in South Africa in 1945 (death certificate).
