HMS Sturdy broken in two

When the ship ran onto rocks at Sandaig during WWII, people living nearby flocked to the assistance of the crew, nursing them and giving them shelter in their homes. In the days that followed, many items were salvaged from the boat as it lay broken on the rocks. In October 2010, a monument was erected on the machair next to the wreck site to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the disaster.
